School Programs
Student Council: Ryerson Elementary will be restarting our Student Council program this school year. The student council will help share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. We will also help raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects and school reform. Our Student Council consists of an executive board and a president from each grade level. We will have a number of events throughout the school year. Please check back in with us periodically for updates.
Ryerson Educator Alliance for Literacy, Leadership, and Learning: R.E.A.L.3 is a collaborative effort from all of the educators in our building to improve our craft. We pick a few books throughout the school year to read and discuss. Instead of just having a book club, we have each grade level or team to present different chapters during our staff meetings. The books we choose often have teacher best practices or motivational topics that are helping us transition, from a good school to a GREAT school! We are currently finishing Teach Like a Champion.
Cougar Comprehension Club: This is a collaborative effort across grade levels to increase the focus on reading, fluency, and comprehension across all grade levels. Throughout the school year, classrooms will partner and read various types of text promote how important it is for everyone no matter where we are in our lives. Younger students have the opportunity practice their reading skills, and older students have the opportunity to model proper fluency, expression. Students often complete assignments together and create comprehension questions according to our weekly target skills.
Family Math Night: Family Math Night is a way for parents and children to talk and work together while learning. It also provides a time and place where communication can take place between the classroom teacher and the family. Mathematical games and activities are put into place to encourage communication and learning as students and parents work together at math stations sharing, clarifying, and defending their understanding of mathematics. Parents have the opportunity to communicate with teachers about how math is being taught. They also have the opportunity to work on math activities with their children in a non-threatening environment. Parents go home with activities to encourage and further math at home.
Family Reading Night: This is a special night to showcase student reading and to get entire families involved is a sure way to boost reading excitement and achievement. We always look forward to these nights because they are an awesome way to let parents know how they can work with teachers to the improve fluency, comprehension, and overall reading ability for their children. We discuss and model small activities and classroom routines that can help parents become more familiar with learning experiences students are encountering at Ryerson Elementary.
Technology Night: This will be a new experience for the Ryerson community. We have been fortunate enough to have a large amount of technological resources in our building as a result of the ALO program and many of our teachers receiving grants. Our goal for this night is to allow parents to see and use the types of technology their students encounter on a daily basis. Another major goal is to provide families with technological resources that they can access in and around the community.

Ryerson Mentorship Program within Ryerson Leadership Academy: The Ryerson Mentorship Program is a new initiative in which we will provide our 6th through 8th grade students with a classroom teacher that will serve as their mentor. We believe our students deserve access to as many positive people as possible. Teachers will build relationships with students and families while monitoring student progress with grades, assessments, and homework. Teachers will work with 7th and 8th grade students to make sure they are gaining access to Chicago’s finest high school institutions.
